A Fly and a Flea

A fly and a flea got caught in a flue. They said to each other, "What shall we do?" Said the fly, "Let's flee!" Said the flea, "Let's fly!". So they flew through a flaw in the flue.

This is the song the 3rd graders have been working on for the past couple of weeks. When we first learned the song, we added body percussion to each of the words in red and practiced performing it at different tempos. Next, we added unpitched percussion instruments to those words and experimented with different ways to perform the song. Finally, we added Orff parts with the xylophones and metallophones. On the last day, we split into 4 groups and performed the song with all 4 parts! Phew! Below are pictures of our full presentation.

Practicing the xylophone bordun.

Practicing the metallophone glissandos.

Putting the whole thing together!

This Is Why We Dot!

The 3rd graders have just finished learning a new rhythm: tika-tika or four 16th notes. To practice tika-tika rhythms, we made our own "This Is Why We Dot" compositions. Students used various round stickers to represent different note values. They then created an eight-beat composition complete with a creative title.
1 dot=quarter note 2 dots=a pair of eighth notes 4 dots= four 16th notes 0 dots=quarter rest

Composer Glogs

The 5th graders just finished their unit on composers. Each of them was assigned a composer and then had to research that person and create a "Glog."  Check out the composer Glogs the 5th graders created!
